What is Health and Wellness Coaching?

. . . it’s the application of the principles and processes of life coaching that focuses on helping people to improve their overall health and well-being through lifestyle changes.

Coaching is a supportive and generative partnership designed to facilitate sustainable change and optimize health and well-being. It is intended to help clients move from dependency to empowerment. Coaching works by helping to build a client’s autonomy and self-efficacy to make internally motivated changes that are appropriate and realistic in the client’s evolving life. Through an alliance, coaches support behavior and lifestyle shifts based on the clients values and strengths.
The goal of health and wellness coaching is to empower clients to take charge of their own health and well-being and make sustainable changes that lead to improved physical and mental health. It facilitates a change process through visioning, goal setting, and accountability. Coaching encourages personal responsibility, reflective thinking, self-discovery, and self-efficacy.
What do Health and Wellness Coaches do?

Coaches typically focus on a holistic approach to health, considering the physical, mental and emotional aspects of well-being. This may include helping clients to adopt healthy behaviors, such as eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, improving sleep, or addressing issues such as managing stress, finding meaning and purpose and work-life balance.
They help support clients in activating internal strengths and external resources to make sustainable healthy lifestyle behavior changes. Coaches use a client-centered approach wherein clients decide their goals, engage in self-discovery or active learning processes and self-monitor behaviors to increase accountability, all within the context of an interpersonal relationship with a health coach.
In the course of their work, health and wellness coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their ability to change. Coaches honor the fact that each client is an expert on their own life and believe every client has the potential to be creative and resourceful.
They often use a variety of coaching techniques, such as goal setting, motivation, and accountability, to help clients make lasting changes. They may also provide education and resources to support their client’s growth and development.

How does it work?
It starts with a Wellness Vision.
As we gain clarity on where you want to be, together we discover your unique path to get there.
The first session is about getting to know you more, your interests in working with a coach and your priorities. We spend time exploring what is most important to you, your values and what stage of change you are in. Together we work towards the creation of a wellness vision, gain clarity around the areas you would like to focus on, create a three-month plan and goals to move toward your vision. All while allowing you to choose your course of action to help you make your desired change.
In subsequent coaching sessions we typically work on reviewing the small goals that you have been working on since the last session. Together we review progress, identify any challenges, brainstorm strategies, find connections, generate possibilities and agree on new experiments until we meet again. However, ultimately the coach partners with you to identify what you want to accomplish in the session.
A Coach may utilize various techniques, tools and applied theories to facilitate inquiry, personal discovery, and self-efficacy such as exploration, guided inquiry, deep listening, and reflection.
What is the Coach Approach?
You are the expert.
This approach is based on the belief that the client is the expert on their own life and has the internal resources and motivation to achieve their goals. The coach’s role is to serve as the facilitator, helping the client to tap into these resources and progress towards their desired outcomes. It focuses on helping clients identify and achieve their goals through a process of self-discovery and action-oriented problem-solving.
Coaches look to collaborate and partner rather than showing up as experts who primarily analyze problems, give advice, prescribe solutions, recommend goals or provide education. Coaches take off the expert hat and refrain from an expert approach, to empower their clients to find their own answers to catalyze lasting change.
In the coach approach, the client is called to become the decision maker, to grow into the expert for their path, as well as the one who evaluates and determines success. Coaches want clients to discover their own answers and create their own possibilities.

Coaching is a process.
We both know that quick fixes tend not to work. Cognitive and behavior change takes time and that’s okay. Humans are complex, and I tend to think life is better together. Partnering can be the first step towards transformation. Changing behavior often takes at least three months, which is why my packages are offered in three months + increments. I desire to see you transform, and that comes in time. I would be delighted if you’d consider partnering with me in the process.
